It’s only natural that a record called Waves should reflect the movement of the sea. With that in mind, it’s a reflection on the greatness of Bitter Ruin’s debut that it manages to capture the sea’s myriad moodswings. It’s an album that moves from smooth water to frenetic swell past dizzying eddys and elemental shifts. From the cyclical ebb and flow of tracks like Diggers and forthcoming single Love Gone Left to full-on psycho-squall tracks like Leather for Hell and Stampede, the album displays an oceanic calmness that bursts into cyclonic chaos before heading back again. The result is a debut record that’s
simultaneously dazzling and disorientating.

Bitter Ruin are Brighton based duo Georgia Train and Ben Richards. Influenced by artists such as Edith Piaf & Bjork (Georgia) and Jeff Buckley and Queen (Ben), Waves was recorded in the band’s own south coast studio the Ruined Rooms. Recording sessions were funded by a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign that ended up raising the band’s ambitious target of £20,000 in just twelve hours. That process allowed Georgia and Ben to make an audacious debut that’s completely uncompromised by external forces; one that’s already been embraced by their legion of online supporters.

Over the last few years, Bitter Ruin have played gigs with people as diverse as Ben Folds, Jarboe (Swans), Tim Minchin & the Dreseden Dolls. The band are due to play a series of shows around the album release – the first confirmed show at the Servant Jazz Quarters in Dalston (May 22nd) sold out within two hours of going on sale. A show at the Social, 5 Little Portland Street, W1 has been confirmed for April 7th and will go on sale later this week (check www.bitterruin.com for ticket information). Further shows (both in and out of London) will be announced shortly.
